Before you read the comments under this article, try answering this trivia question (not directly related to the article) that a commenter raised: In baseball, what are the seven different ways, besides getting a hit, by which a batter can reach first base safely? |

Off the top of my head (i.e without Google)
1. Walk - 4 balls 2. Hit by pitch 3. Fielders choice 4. 3rd strike ball dropped by catcher and steal first 5. Intentional walk 6. Balk by pitcher 7. Error by defense
|
You are missing a base hit.
The question excluded base hit. Does walk and intentional walk count as two different entries? How about double play (where the batter isn't one of the outs)? |

If the runner gets hit by a batted ball, they are out, but the hitter does not receive credit for a hit.
And
they can be put in as a pinch runner or interference
|
I'm guessing the word safely takes getting hit by the ball out of the mix
(Your inexperience with baseball is noted.)
Getting to first base "safely" in the baseball sense has nothing to do with physical injury or equipment breakage. "Hit by pitch" is indeed one of the seven possibilities.
a broken bat,
Whether a bat breaks has nothing to do with getting to first base.
4 balls
Correct.
,steal,
Nice try, but it's not possible to "steal" to first base. Only a runner who is already on base can steal the next base.
( and grounder bunt and other's seem off the list
Whether the batter bunts or makes a regular hitting motion when batting the ball makes no difference in getting to first base. (It can make a difference in getting called out on strikes, though.) |
Does walk and intentional walk count as two different entries?
Although official scorers nowadays record whether a walk was intentional (catcher stands to side and signals, etc.), which I think was not always done in the past, they're both the same entry in this list of seven. |
