I'm guessing the word safely takes getting hit by the ball out of the mix a broken bat,4 balls ,steal, ( and grounder bunt and other's seem off the list ( though I don't watch baseball really)).

You cannot get to first on a balk. You are missing a base hit.

I believe that counts under fielder's choice.

If the runner gets hit by a batted ball, they are out, but the hitter does not receive credit for a hit.

And [spoiler]they can be put in as a pinch runner

Getting to first base "safely" in the baseball sense has nothing to do with physical injury or equipment breakage. "Hit by pitch" is indeed one of the seven possibilities.

[/QUOTE]Although official scorers nowadays record whether a walk was intentional (catcher stands to side and signals, etc.), which I think was not always done in the past, they're both the same entry in this list of seven.
