Although Chicago makes national (and international?) headlines, it's not even in the top 5 when viewed on a per capita basis. That's not to trivialize the issue though -- there is obviously a ton of violence in Chicago, and recent years have also demonstrated systemic issues with the Chicago PD as well...

There was an in-depth report that ran for 30 minutes or so by Channel 4 news the other evening, focussing on an ex-gang member in Chicago trying to stop younger versions of himself from killing and / or being killed on the streets. His success rate was far from 100%.
