Right! I was also thinking more to the snake than to the people. That snake is not dangerous, and for sure it was pretty terrified by this experience, poor thing...

I'm not disputing that it was abuse, but can reptiles be scared?

Isn't fear a perception of threat? Animals less complex than reptiles have that ability. Snakes and lizards usually want to get away from humans, unless they are big enough to eat one.
Also, be wary of anthropocentric thinking with regard to other kinds of creatures.
