If he had said the four color conjecture may be false
I believe it's Four Colour Theorem, now.

(As an American:)

American English is not incorrect. It is simply a variant of British English, which has its roots in the French-Norman conquest of the Anglo and Saxon peoples. Read Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue, it's a good book.

P.S.:
:direction:
Does anyone agree?
