Cool. I am a genetics major.

As for my appreciation of German... Unfortunately I can neither speak nor spell it. I do have a good friend living in Germany though courtesy of the foreign exchange student program.
Doesn't this have to change?
You know, I was wondering if anyone would comment on that. I am waiting to change it until a verification is complete. No point in jumping the gun prematurely.

Kritik an deutschen Namen ist eindeutig Diskriminierung. Niemand hier diskriminiert andere, und wenn dies der Fall wäre, würden sie verboten werden. Also niemand hier kritisiert deutsche Namen.

Yes we can ... :).

I think he said he wasn't criticizing...

I'm wondering if the actual finder of the new mersenne prime number will also get a visit from a television team (like Mr. Elvenich). Will he/she get famous?

Primeinator 2009-06-07 18:06

I doubt it. It is not a record breaker nor has it passed some major landmark (such as 10m digits which has already been done).

I said that criticism of German names is discrimination, that nobody discrimiates here or they would be banned, and that this is why nobody here criticises German names.
By the way I'm astounished that the media is holding back with the new Mersenne prime. I thought they would write about it as fast as last time.
Normally, there's a thread like this while the candidate is verified, (and as part of the thread, it sometimes will become known but kept secret which is the candidate, note that in v4 it was quite different overall, read one of the old threads and you can see the process from discovery to announce) then after verification a press release goes out and the media picks up on it and posts it. Really the only thing different this time (besides the 2 month gap between computer saying "Prime!" and human seeing "Prime!") is that due to the different circumstances and lack of hiding on the v5 server, the candidate is already known.
If you think the secrecy and lack of press before the verification is complete is unnecessary, consider that once before in GIMPS history (pretty sure it was just once...) there was a bug that made a prime be reported, and it was proven composite in the verification, before it was announced, saving GIMPS and countless news sources from retractions and bad press. At least, I think that's how it all happened. This is from memory from reading the thread. It's on this forum somewhere, but I don't feel like digging it up at the moment.

I do think it isn't necessary to keep it secret. I do have the same opinion of 'officially inform the press' only after verifying the number. That doesn't include keeping it secret which is a complete different thing.

Tony, Kevin,

I'm running freshly compiled code, as such I get a little paranoid :drama:.

Would you please confirm for me that we have matching residues?
Iter# = 400000 Res64: 105007A65A192DF9
Thank you!

PS: I've just passed the 10% completion mark.
