I am going to be away

I would like to know I can let the server know that I won't be doing any processing while I am away on vacation/holiday. Also my help menu won't function. I get a failed to launch help message. This is aggravating but not a fatal problem. Any advise or help would be greatly apprecieated. If I have missed the obvious, please bear with me.

You can find the documentation in the text files that are bundled together with the program. I you do not have a readme.txt, whatsnew.txt and undoc.txt files, just download the latest version of the program : ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/P95v259.zip. Unzip the file and you will find the documentation.

If you go away for a long time (more than a month) go to GIMS site, log in, and use the "Manual Results" / "Extension" page to extend the expiration date of your assigned exponents by 60 days.

how to exit Prime95?

Hi,

I entered Prime95 in January 2009. My PC was engaged in checking four 2p-1 numbers for incessantly 3 month. All numbers were not primes. I gave up with further computing.

Now I would like to exit primenet, but I can not remove Prime95 program from my PC. There is no such a program at the list of programs in Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs.

What shall I do to remove it?

To remove prime95 nicely & cleanly, there are three steps:

1 In prime95's Advanced menu, choose the Quit GIMPS... option. It will ask if you want to complete current work before quitting.

2 Once prime95 has finished any remaining work, go to its Options menu, and uncheck Start at Bootup.

3 Exit prime95 & delete its folder.

If you skip the first two steps, it's not that bad. The primenet server will eventually make your assignments expire & free them for someone else. And Windows will cope if you skip the second step.

Thanks for your contribution to the project! Mersenne primes are very rare... For most of us, the prospect of finding one is not the main motivation.

Here is what you should do if you still wish to quit.
Make sure you are connected the internet.
Start the Prime95 program.
Open the window.
From the Advanced menu, select Quit Gimps.
Wait for it to finish any communication.
Delete the folder with the program.

:ermm:hi, even when you failed to find a prime, there is still lot of things to do:

 1) Enjoy knowing new people in forums.
2) Learning about new tendencies in math, hardware and software
3) Protect your investement everytime you buy a new PC (running prime95)
4) Talk to other about prime numbers (they are sexy, lol!!!!!)

But if you are determined to leave alone , take the guide posted by Uncwilly, and thx for the effort.
Best regards, Carlos

yeeeeh

hi everybody,

honestly, I am a bit disappointed by your (kind) reaction to my post ... Thank you all, anyway, for practical solutions, but feel also a little undeservedly scolded.

I understand the mission, passion and math love focussed by other forum members. I am also very proud that I dedicated part of my PC power (OK, very small) to make Mersenne primes' number larger.

Still, however, I believe that joining primenet is voluntarily and such accidental members as me should not be banned/patronized by any means. I was not going to win a USD150.000 prize, but become one of 1% lucky discoverers. Similar to those who look f.ex. for comets. I am not guilty that starting fan of my PC's power supply awakes family during nights. For three month.

Thus I expect that GIMPS shall provide legible "unsubcribe" function to Prime95 to those who may get in/get out more easly.

Once we migrate to summer house this year I promisse all Mersenne prime fans to enter primenet again. At empty home. For three month only.

Best regards

Bohdan

You might possibly be the most oversensitive person on the planet.
honestly, I am a bit disappointed by your (kind) reaction to my post ... Thank you all, anyway, for practical solutions, but feel also a little undeservedly scolded.
Sorry you feel that way, but I, too, don't see what could be interpreted as scolding.

Perhaps this is a language problem: you may have intended something less strong than "scolded" usually implies to most of us.
such accidental members as me should not be banned/patronized by any means.
You are not "banned" in any way. I don't see how you were patronized, either. Can you explain further what you mean by these terms? (Again, this may be simply a misunderstanding.)
Thus I expect that GIMPS shall provide legible "unsubcribe" function to Prime95 to those who may get in/get out more easly.
Post #5 already explained how to do that:
Make sure you are connected the internet.
Start the Prime95 program.
Open the window.
From the Advanced menu, select Quit Gimps.
Wait for it to finish any communication.
Delete the folder with the program.
Are you complaining that the "Quit Gimps" should be relabeled "Unsubscribe"? Or that the option should be on the window header instead of the "Advanced" dropdown menu?
Once we migrate to summer house this year I promisse all Mersenne prime fans to enter primenet again. At empty home. For three month only.
We'll be glad to have you back, even for only three months, and at least some of us will try to work out any misunderstandings if you wish to discuss them further.

My instructions where designed to be for someone that wants to stop in 'best' and most considerate way.

The short and dirty method.
Exit program.
Delete folder.

I, like most everyone else here appreciate all help that is given. I don't want to discourage anyone. And I understand adjusting work seasonally.
