So have you presented the answer or is this apparent mess
really something of mathematical importance?

The answer was implicitly posted by another poster. Who says things need to have mathematical importance in the puzzles section?

I eagerly await your reply in 2012

Assuming all things go on as they are going now,
the anticipation has certainly started.
But all the way to 2012 with an unscrambled cypher?
That's not reasonable.
However, not being a being of infinite wisdom, I wouldn't want to
tell you what to do.

It could be a letter-for-word cipher. "IDK" can be "I Don't Know".

It could also be a code used during The Civil War. It can also be Enigma.

I was always fascinated by this stuff...

I see that "4sigma" on your other forum solved the cypher,
and also that you subsequently gave an "enormous" hint.
You might want to "inform" us too.
I'll be curious until 2012.
And not a second more :)

Give this a try. Below are the characters used:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789.,?!
Below is the ciphered text.

Encoding is easy. It is the decoding that can be hard. It does work, quite well.

One would hope so.

...and continuing to debug and making adjustments accordingly.

I guess the plaintext is:
I am loth to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battle-field, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.
(or some minor variation thereof)
Now, as for how you encrypted it, I haven't even tried to find out!

I've worked on this for a while now. I had to get away from prime numbers, except for running P95. Crypto has been a bit of a passion for a long time. Most are for files, using the entire character set. Not so many do plain text. I did this only to see if I could make it work, and when it did, I made it more and more complex.
