How much credit for LL?
Hey,
I've build my dedicated E5200 (stock clock) rig with 4 gigs of ram. How long and how much GHz credit will I get to complete an LL test? Also, is there a more efficient way of getting credit ie. does P-1 award more credit than LL, for example? Cheers :D |

if you run only for CPU-Credit you should do TF The values of my computer are (E6600 at 2.4 GHz, always 1 worker): 1 day TF ~ 2.8 GHzDays 1 day LLT ~ 2.4 GHzDays 1 day P-1/ECM ~1.9 GHzDays A LLT with exponent ~ 45e6 will need ~ 30 days and you will get ~ 80 GHzDays CPU-Credit. do those values change if you use an AMD proc.? I P-1 factor on my Athlon X2, but if it's more efficient to do so I think I'll switch to TF. Cheers |

yes, AMD's should have other ratios between these values. AMD's should be better for TF to low limit and less efficient for LLT/P-1/ECM and 'normal' TF. Best regards, Matthias |
On an AMD, TF probably gives more credit. Definitely if it is a 64-bit processor and you are using a 64-bit OS. The best thing is to run a benchmark and then compare against the benchmark os a reference processor, i.e. any Core 2 Duo.

Thanks[/quote] Running TF on a 64-bit OS is more like a 100% increase (i.e. double), unless I'm mistaken. Other types of work (LL/DC anyway, not sure about P-1) have little to no difference running on 64-bit OS vs 32-bit OS. Also, Athlons are better at TF than Intel, but Intel is better at LL than Athlons, so probably the way to get the most inflated GHz days credit is to run TF on an Athlon with a 64-bit OS. |

One can participate in GIMPS (1) For fun. (2) To help advance the art. (3) Because one is interested in number theory. (4) Because one wants to learn the algorithms. But for "credit"??? The credit goes to George and all those who gave their coding help, theoretical help, and time to make the project a reality. But I have still never seen a cogent explanation for why anyone deserves "credit" for mindlessly downloading then running software developed by others. I think "credit" for merely supplying CPU time is silly. One might be given recognition for participating, but giving "more" credit to people simply for providing "more" cpu time shows a screwed up sense of values, IMO. Why should a someone at a university with 100's of computers (that they did not buy!!!) deserve "more" credit than someone who bought his own [b]single[/b] PC??? |
