Let's talk about the weather

Here's a thread for misc. discussions about the weather. I think we all find it kind of funny what different people consider as 'extreme' weather, both hot and cold, so bring on your unusual (or usual) climate observations, both locally and internationally.

Offtopic.

This night snowed something that it is rare in the region I live in Portugal. I live in the north near the beach and 15 miles away from here snowed all night long. Looking at the temps you can see that the min temps in Portugal are almost below 0 ºC.
I know that for some of you it's an usual thing but here only happens one time in 20 years or more...lol
Last time it snowed here where I live I was like 5-6 years old...funny?
Anyway, I just wanted to share this thing with you guys.

Ah, you guys are such weenies. Last night it got down to about 15 (F) where I live (~northeastern U.S.) and tonight's forecast to have a low of 10 F.

We are just south of Gatwick Airport and have been getting -7C (19F) at night. (19F). I remember a weather report of -26C (-15F) here in the 1980s.
I've been putting back heat-pads on the rabbit's water bottle to stop it freezing.
Some snow would be nice.

Yesterday I fire up my old AMD 64 3000+ to help heating my room...lol

Must have been 1982:

iirc The weatherman said that had some more temperature 'stickers' made because they only went down to -20C.

Someone needs to split this thread.

I remember the windows covered in ice on the inside in beautiful fern patterns.

I live in Texas. The low for this winter (so far) is 24.6. It was 63 degrees this morning, it's about 74 now, predicted high/low today of 81/52, tomorrow 58/34. Today is warmer than it's been lately, but not too unusual. Texas doesn't have months of winter, it has days of winter (not only referring to overall length, but the quick changes like today and tomorrow). I don't think I've ever seen snow (besides TV/pictures).

Same here (southern California). There are only a few days a year where the temperatures drop below 40 degrees (4 degrees Celsius), and it snows maybe once in 25 years or so.

Colder weather can be found in the mountains a half hour drive from where I live. But even there, most of the snow is man-made by the ski resorts, and yearly snowfall totals might be 5-8 feet at the most.

gd_barnes 2009-01-09 23:17

What a bunch of wusses! lmao

The low here last night in the Kansas City area was in the low 20's F (-5 to -7 C). Early Thurs., I flew in from Las Vegas where the low was in the low 30's (0 C) thru Denver where the low was also in the 30's.

We've had 3-4 days below 10 F (< -15 C) in Kansas City this winter. I think it's pretty similar here vs. where Max lives.

em99010pepe 2009-01-10 11:12

This is the same feeling when people living in the interior go to the beach for the first time, the touch of the sand, the sound of the waves.

You see adults acting like children, snow wars, etc...

At least three guys are with me, the wusses can stay with Gary.

Flatlander 2009-01-10 13:27

Hurray! We had snow last night.

It's about 1mm deep - possibly 2. lol

glennpat 2009-01-10 14:38

It's 1 F here in Minnesota. I don't much care for winter. At least the electricity for the computers also heat the house. Getting older so some day might just head south.

petrw1 2009-01-10 19:04

Cold snap finally ended.

Since Dec 13, 2008 we have only had one day with daytime high above normal of -11C. (Dec 28 was -8C). Today will be -6C.

During that time we got as low as -38C over night with windchills as low as -50C some days/nights.

Now, THAT is painful! I guess us U.S. folks are wusses compared to Canadians. lol

henryzz 2009-01-11 14:26

dont worry i think the UK people even worse

This was a colder December/Early January than most but even after 50 years I still can't get used to the cold and still wonder why I'm still living here.

IronBits 2009-01-12 03:52

How about this one then? These guys/gals are nuts!

Today, the local news said that there was a high fire danger due to strong winds and low humidity. Temps were also unseasonably warm, even for my area.

Still though, wildfires in mid-January? Wow.

I'm still not used to the summer heat after 15+ years of living here. It gets up to 105 degrees (40 degrees C) on some days, and there's the occasional threat of a power outage due to high electricity demand. I'm not thinking about moving unless global warming turns out to be really bad, but the ideal weather for me would be somewhere like Reno, Nevada or Santa Fe, New Mexico. Summer highs are in the low 90s (33 degrees C), and winter lows are in the high teens to low 20s ( - 7 degrees C). So it's cold enough for snow, but not that cold.

A new low was hit today - 24.4.

This might qualify as 'extreme' ...

At my location near the 35th Parallel (North), we had 30 inches of snow in the month of December alone, about half of our average snowfall for a winter.

MyDogBuster 2009-01-17 11:39

Two things.

It's only 6F outside right now (Delaware 6AM EST Saturday). My sisters stupid cat just wanted out for a constitutional. Good luck.

I was emailing an old friend of mine in Spirit Lake Idaho (I lived there for 6 years and will probably head back after the doctors fix my heart). A normal winter (Oct to May) would have 2-3 feet of snow constantly on the ground. They now have 23 feet. Granted thats up at 3000 ft above sea level, but thats still a lot. I wonder how my old road grader is coping. I lived in a development with 350 plots, 10 acres or more and the road committee had 26 miles of roads to maintain. We had 2 used road graders procured from the Idaho Dept of Transportation and 2 dump trucks with plows on the front. I drove one of the graders. Great fun taking out my neighbors mail boxes. If we keep getting snow like that every year, we can start our own glacier.

Whoo Hoo....a week of above normal temps forecasted. Near 0C (32F) all week. Normal is -12C

CADavis 2009-01-18 10:20

Three days ago it was about 25 degrees below 0F (about -32C), and the next day it was still 15 degrees below 0F (about -26C). Seems to be the coldest it has been for something like 20 years

Every school canceled classes that first day, I guess because it was too dangerous for kids to walk or wait outside for the bus

IronBits 2009-01-18 10:46

I was outside in shorts and no shirt, basking in 78F weather.

Flatlander 2009-02-01 22:29

Just had a great snowball 'fight' with the neighbours. It's only about 4cm deep but more is forecast tomorrow.

The Gatwick runway has been closed for a couple of hours. The man with the spade must be having a long tea break.

texas is in severe drought they could handle 5 of the tropical storms headed their way back to back possibly before out of drought according to a weather station I watched.

Texas is in severe drought ! They could according to a weather station I watched, handle 5 times the rain expected of the storm ( and hence 5 storms like it) that is currently on it's way.
