Help with mersenne.org
Does anybody know how to get to the old page the had all the timings for all the cpus and let you put in a number and told you how long it would take finish, and how many digits it is. I no longer see a link to it.
|
The link's dead now.
|
It's gone, and I don't think it's coming back. The closest thing I can see is the Benchmarks page: http://v5www.mersenne.org/report_benchmarks/
In any case, the old benchmarks page tended to give very optimistic estimates because it used the fastest reported times. You can get a more accurate estimate by opening the client, going to Advanced, and clicking on Time. |
yeh I liked the piece of software they had on that page
|
How about this?

I think there were a lot of things lost from the old web-pages that would be good to bring back. The benchmarks page is at the top of the list of the pages that I miss, but I also think that the general pages such as "FAQ", "The math", "Status", "History", and "Links" had much in them that caught the attention of potential new users. The new pages are generally adequate in most ways for those of us who have been around awhile, but I don't think that they are all that appealing to novices. If George or anyone else would like some help creating new versions of some of these pages, I would be happy to help.

You will find most of these in the Menu on the left of the main page near the bottom under "About GIMPS" The other part about estimating time (along with points calculation) is potentially referred to here ... read up to Post #7 http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=10937 |

The non-JS remark explains why I can't see it on my mother's computer. I found the history info under the "found twelve" link, but I can't see any of the others. |

Ok, I am home, using Mozilla Firefox with Javascript enabled, I still do not see the links. I do see them in the source html, but not in the browser version. Any suggestions? What do I have to do to see the links in Internet Explorer?

Any suggestions?
This is a bit of a naughty suggestion, but, you could write a message to ask for all JS code on the site to be removed and replaced with normal links. I have done that already, but I received no response so I guess it is not a high priority :(

What do you see in Firefox where the links should be? Could you post a screenshot? |
Ok, I am home, using Mozilla Firefox with Javascript enabled,
Which version? By the time I started with Firefox, it was already 3.0 (with which I have no trouble seeing mersenne.org links -- JS-enabled), so I have no experience with FF 2. I see comments that lots of stuff was improved between FF 2 and FF 3.

Here is a screenshot. The version, by the way, is 3.0.4. |
Well, JavaScript must be running, because otherwise the links from "My Account" to "About GIMPS" won't appear at all. So, what exactly is the problem? Does clicking on the little plus signs on the left of those links somehow fail to expand the menus? |
Does clicking on the little plus signs on the left of those links somehow fail to expand the menus?
I did not realize that that was the function of those plus signs! I clicked on "About GIMPS" and only got redirected to the same page, but I thought that the plus sign was just part of that same link. Thanks! I still miss the benchmarks page, though... |
clicking on the little plus signs on the left of those links
Is there a way to have clicking on a link ("My Account", "My Team" ... "About GIMPS") result in expansion of the menu whenever the current page is already at that link?
I.e., 1) if one is at the "My Account" page and clicks on the "About GIMPS" link, it goes to the "About GIMPS" page, but if one is already at the "About GIMPS" page and clicks on the "About GIMPS" link, it expands the menu beneath "About GIMPS". OR 2) simply automatically expand the menu whenever the viewer is at one of the main link pages? I.e., if one is at the "My Account" page and clicks on the "About GIMPS" link, it not only goes to the "About GIMPS" page, but also expands the menu beneath "About GIMPS". (These would be in addition to the existing function of the little plus signs.) ... and ... do all this "with normal links"? |
[broken record]
Hey, why don't "they" just remove the JS code and put back the friendly standard HTML links? Now that's a good idea, I should have thought of that before. [/broken record] Of course, it doesn't work well nowadays with "broken CD", or even worse with "broken MP3". |
I still miss the benchmarks page, though...
There's "CPU Benchmarks" under "Results Queries". |
Thanks, that page is definitely helpful.
