Fake factorizations
It's easy to artificially create big factorizations by multiplying randomly chosen large primes. Should the database be protected from such fake factorizations? If so, how can we know which ones are fake? Anyway, this one looks very suspicious.

The database just holds factorizations of numbers. If someone wants to construct a composite with a known factorization by multiplying large numbers and submit that to the database, there's nothing wrong with it. It's not like it's supposed to hold records for hardest completed factorizations. Barring a bug, if the DB says a number is factorized in such a way, that's the way it's really factorized, (it does check factors before adding them) so it's not a "fake" factorization. The only sense that things like the one you linked are fake is that they were probably constructed from the primes instead of the integer being factored. |
Just in case if Syd reads this (no activity since June 9th, no reply to an email, I hope it's nothing worse than a broken internet connection):
In the DB, (11^287-1)/(11^41-1) does not "inherit" the factors from 11^287-1. |
Reporting work is no longer available
I recently noticed one can no longer post their work on a number like the old Workers. I would sometimes finish a sequence to the appropriate c-level then, if I did significant ECM work, I would post my curves as work completed. Such as 50 curves @ B1=3e6.
This feature has recently been removed. |

I stand corrected. I guess I didn't noticed I was signed out since I've been away for a while. Thanks Mini-Geek for staying on top of things. |
looking for signs of life...
Syd hasn't shown any activity in the forum since almost two months (last activity: June(sic!) 9th) - has anyone been in contact (email and such) with him since then?

The "imprint" on FactorDB (linked at the bottom) gives his address (/office/some place related to him)... |

Hmmm... this is different to the email adress which I have (i had some email contact with him in spring). I have sent an email to him before you have posted (via the email function in mersenneforum). If I get no answer in the next few days, I will try the address given in the FactorDB. |

I saw he submitted a factor to Kamada factoring project on July 5. |
number 57 or 283
[I am not sure if it is right thread for such problem]
At page http://factordb.com/search.php?id=167488215 there is listed number 57 which is obviously factored, but blocks progress of sequence: http://factordb.com/search.php?se=16&aq=87&action=last20 , additionally in text mode of the same sequence: http://factordb.com/search.php?se=16&aq=87&action=last20&fr=&to=&text=Text there is similarly number 283. "Repair sequence" doesn't work. Is there any workaround for this issue? |
