Intel i7 ("Nehalem") chips launched
Intel has officially launched its i7 chips. Anybody getting one?
|
*wants*, but unlikely to get it
until then, I have to stick with my very noisy (which is because it's very warm) Pentium 4... also, isn't it Nehalem, and not Nahelam? |
I think I might get a Q9550 since I am predicting those cpus to lower in price pretty soon after Nehalem has been out for a little bit. Also DDR2 and the LGA775 motherboards are a good bit cheaper than DDR3 and the new socket mobos

A search at intel.com for "Nahelam"; (http://mysearch.intel.com/corporate/default.aspx?culture=en_US&q=Nahelam&category=&adv=&value=&searchsubmit.x=26&searchsubmit.y=12) returns
Results for Nahelam Did you mean Nehalem?
... but clicking on the "Nehalem" link there (http://mysearch.intel.com/corporate/default.aspx?q=Nehalem&spell=1&access=p&ie=utf8&lr=lang_en&client=A000_Default&num=15&site=P022_en-US&site=P022_en-USoe=utf8) gets you
Results for Nehalem Your search - Nehalem - did not match any documents. No pages were found containing "Nehalem"
(However, a direct search for "Nehalem" (http://mysearch.intel.com/corporate/default.aspx?culture=en_US&q=Nehalem&category=&adv=&value=&searchsubmit.x=23&searchsubmit.y=13) gets 10 pages of results.) |
Me and my friend will probably be getting one each, we started off desiring the 920 but we've both worked up to desiring the 965 due to the unlocked multiplier and speedier QuickPath.
I've also been checking out water cooling options but since the socket is new the options are very limited at this time. Heck, even options for standard air cooling are limited. |
I was keen initially, but what I do is mostly parallel enough that the pricing doesn't make sense; the difference between a 920 and a 965 is enough to buy two whole Q6600 systems. The Nehalem-based Xeons look to be even worse for this: eight or so speed grades and $958 per chip for even 2.66GHz (http://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-product-roadmap-2009,6384.html)

Yeah, I meant to write "Nehalem," but by the time I noticed the typo, it was already too late for me to change it. It looks like someone else has "corrected" it for me, though.

I am picking this up today: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showpost.php?p=143654&postcount=344 Except Motherboard has been upgraded to GA-EP45-UD3P. And I am taking a chance on Vista64 |

Does the 64-bit-ness compensate the enormous ressource-hunger of Vista (compared with Win XP professional)? |
Vista 64-bit is fine, and it doubles the speed of trial factoring!

I am getting 4 GB RAM ... and need more than 32 bits to see it. But there were enough posters in this forum using Vista (some 64) for GIMPS that I was willing to trust it ... I don't think Microsoft is going to let this one pass as they did for ME so I decided to go with the flow. However, to be safe I ordered the version that give me the XP downgrade option if I get really annoyed. |
