That's part of why I decided to switch everything that has AVX over to 2 core 100M workers.
Let's be honest with ourselves... The chances of anyone finding a 100M DIGIT MP within our lifetimes is extremely small.

Heck, the last MP found (57885161) was estimated by some to have cost Curtis' University over a million dollars in electricity.

Not being negative here, just objective. Until we really get many qbits, this is going to be the case.

So, then, why do we do this?

For some because it's fun. For some others because it is a driving problem for distributed computing and algorithms. For some others because they don't understand the space which needs to be explored....

If I had a very underpowered spaceship and a swath of unexplored space I'd still go explorin'....but I don't because of the fkin dark ages so this will have to suffice.

That estimate seems high.

I run 4 computers and 2 GPUs at about 1000 watts. 24kwh * $0.13 is $3.12 per day or $1140 / year. Curtisc is doing 69x my output according to top producers. Be generous and round that up to 100. That's $114,000 / yr -- less than $500,000 for 4 years.

That does not include A/C costs. However, I'll bet the University is not running power hungry GPUs and they have a much better electric rate than I do.

Notice that those computers must be powered on at least 12 hours a day in order to perform other tasks. Otherwise the University would not have bought those machines. So you will need to halve the power consumption estimation for GIMPS.

Speak for yourself. I for one plan to be around for the next 100 years at least. I think even a billion digit MP is quite within the conservative realm of possibility.
