The leak widens: Neue Zürcher Zeitung (CH)
http://www.nzz.ch/nachrichten/wissenschaft/naechstgroesste_primzahlen_errechnet__1.830236.html (same data, one computer in Germany...) and in Der Standard (which may be a Russian sym.print in Germany - but I haven't found anything in Russian press; I'll keep an eye)http://vedomosti.newspaperdirect.com/epaper/viewer.aspx
Berlin – Two mathematicians in the USA and New Zealand have discovered independently of each other two new record prime numbers. Both figures have broken more than ten million decimal places and with it the world record from the year 2006 – a prime number with 9.8 million places. This informed of the German mathematician's union (DMV) on Friday in Berlin. Unclear it is still which is the bigger one of both figures. (DPA)
(translation is not mine) |
Are they confusing the verifiers with the discoverers?
|
I think that's a risk when delaying the announcement too long. Some outlets will jump the gun and report even without knowing the exponents, and the others might end up annoyed/disinterested if someone else beat them to the story.

It is very similar to the one from the NZZ. Both have the source (ap) = Asscoiated Press maybe that helps to locate the leak |
If George never discloses the exponents, users would still find out what they are. All they have to know are hours during which the exponents were returned.
Suppose we know that a prime-yielding exponent was returned in a time slot with eight other exponents. In order to find out the exponent in question, users would have to do nine L-L tests at most. |
Are they confusing the verifiers with the discoverers?
Unfortunately they are  |

(translation is not mine)
The original link was found using google for Primzahl and the German Math Society. 'Vedomosty' has nothing to do with it (they only provide a page verbatim view service for hudreds of newspapers). Found the correct 'Der Standard' link. It's an Austrian paper. http://derstandard.at/?id=1220458022174 Yep, they mixed up everything. |

They used to do better research (german: Recherche, did I translate it corectly?) for their articles. |
The trouble is that http://mersenne.org/ tells us now nearly
everything we are interested in. The only thing we have yet to learn is the exact exponents and the owners of the computers which found the primes. David |
Here they even say the name of some of the verificatory that they calculated the prime numbers...
