M36 was found on August 24, 1997
(date(M36) - 1 = 23)
MAug was found on August 23, 2008
(date(MAug) = 23)

M44 was found on September 4, 2006
(date(M44)/2 = 2)
MSept was found on September 6, 2008
(date(MSept)/2 = 3)

Now try to keep it up for several years.

Looking at the info on the 2 different systems that checked M[sub]Aug[/sub] and M[sub]Sep[/sub].

M[sub]Aug[/sub] was checked on a Sun SPARC Enterprise M5000 Server, while
M[sub]Sep[/sub] was checked on a Sun SPARC Enterprise M8000 Server.

The M5000 had 8 dual cores, the M8000 had 4 quad core. [B](1 point for the M8000)[/B]

The M5000 was running at 2.15GHz, the M8000 was running at 2.52GHz. [B](2 points for the M8000)[/B]

The M5000 has "System Bus bandwidth (Memory) 64 GB/s peak, 24.831 GB/s stream (Copy)", the M8000 "System Bus bandwidth (Memory) 184 GB/s peak, 60.314 GB/s stream (Copy)" [B](1 point for the M8000)[/B]

The M5000 has 5MB of Level2 on chip cache, the M8000 has 6MB [B](1 point for the M8000)[/B]

So, it seems with all those plusses and assuming that the FFT size problem was fixed, it is not unlikely that M[sub]Sep[/sub] maybe bigger than M[sub]Aug[/sub]

[quote=me]Or maybe it is real big and Sun decided to allow one BIG bruiser of a machine to be allowed to run it. Showing off the power a new machine, "the x-35 completed a verification run of a 10M digit number in 15 days, while the X-47b completed a verification of a 25M digit number in only 5 days."[/quote]:george::et_:

The german News-site "Der Spiegel" is already reporting about the two new primes:

It looks quite long. Can someone who knows German translate the main points?

Nelson 2008-09-13 11:01

Main points?

Looks more like a filler.

Nothing drastically new, some noise about whether online security might be compromised (no) and a quick simplified proof of why there are an infinite number of Primes.

They claim that both new primes have more than 10 million digits.

I'm inclined to agree.
If George and Scott don't get the press release out soon, it will
be old news:smile:

We can't expect others not to be looking at this Forum and not come to a reliable conclusion. About the only way to limit that will be to ban such postings or prevent the server from even listing "unverified primes". We would miss out on a lot of fun though. Perhaps not having the verification results actually posted here would reduce some of the speculation. Essentially the only thing left that is new is the actual numbers.

It is a part of the "instant gratification" phenomenon foisted on us by media trying to do each other one better sort of saying, "You saw it here first!", which isn't true because someone else had already seen it before the general popoulation who probably don't give a rip anyway. Since the actual numbers are not actually released all that happens is they have to post another article later with much of the same content which will be a waste of time for most readers and particularly any interested in mathematics related material. When trying to "prime the pump" one can get quite wet. Media being what it is makes it one of the best places to generate interest in participation which hopefully advances the speed of finding even bigger ones. If someone misses the news the first time they still may hear about it the next time around.

Don't be surprised if two mersennes per year start dropping at this rate. Does anyone really know what the distribution is? All we really know is that the bigger the number the less likely it is to be prime reducing the number of candidates to test in a equal range of numbers.

Does it really matter that we know that it has been verified before a press release is out? We still know before it is actually published! That way we also have "the jump". Any one else really interested will see it if he checks the homepage or he will just have to wait until the press gets it published. Browsers can also be set to notify you when a page has been changed you know.

Any more questions about posting the numbers here?

According to that report one Prime number was probably found by a computer in Germany.

How can they know that?

It also says "...according to the german mathematician society"
