No Mersenne Prime Left Behind
After all, with the prize money gone, the smallish exponents would look sweet again and the neglected sub-10,000,000-digit region could enjoy a new wave of attention.
I don't think so; most sub-10,000,000 digit exponents have already been checked once. Checking "Request Mersenne numbers to run primality tests" now almost always gives numbers above 10M digits.

Batalov 2008-09-12 02:03

Yes, they are "checked out", but not "checked" (="tested"). Many thousands are not tested even once. They would be tested for several years at the current rate. So, I believe that this may change now.

These assignments are available in fact, but not trivially. One may check for special early times every week or so, when the very late assignments are being released in bundles. One strategy is to check the summary page and observe the 5th column. When it is filled with numbers - that would be a time to get such assignments. The trick is then for one's grab not to exceed one's reach. Or what's the heaven for.

Have you heard of NPLB? NPLB=No Prime Left Behind, so NMPLB would be what coyote posted. I think you may just be a bit excited with all the M45/M46 news (as we all are), and are mixing your Mersenne news with something called NPLB into NMPLB.
Then again, maybe NPLB will expand to Mersenne primes at some point and call it NMPLB.

M-mmm. Haven't tried sardonic answers for a while.

Yes, I've heard about it. But NMPLB is patently mine.
And the idea to find the 2nd Mersenne prime right now was also patently mine !

I already mentioned something to this effect in the other thread (don't care enough to link it). I don't think there are many people that care enough and have sufficient knowledge to hoard expiring exponents that aren't already doing it. Having a few additional dedicated people working on clearing first time tests below the 10M digit mark will certainly help clear the bulk, but there will inevitably be a few stragglers that end up taking years before they finally get tested.

It may not be this one but it is related to your comment regarding "...clearing first time tests below the 10M mark...". There are about 7,000 left

I would be in favor of a concerted effort to do so, but there will always be the issue of a short list of exponents progressing V-E-R-Y slowly. (This is NOT meant as a criticizm; everyone has the right to participate as much or as little as they feel able to.). For example, these 3 were assigned in 2004:

25556353 68 10580426 1367 91.6 66.6 11-Sep-08 07:24 14-Dec-04 10:44
23241373 68 5817688 1525 95.1 62.1 16-Aug-08 19:48 09-Jul-04 12:26
23312323 68 15832299 1414 98.8 63.8 05-Sep-08 12:19 28-Oct-04 08:37

I removed the names as my intent is NOT to pick on anyone.

In the same spirit as Jonathan Swift, allow me a modest proposal:

When a New Mersenne prime is found, it's discovery may
be announced, BUT: its value shall not be announced
or any prize awarded until ALL lower exponents have been cleared.....

Cataldi, Mersenne and Euler had no such inhibitions:smile:

As for Fermat...

It is phenomenally difficult to prevent leaks so you would have to distinguish between "announcement" and "formal announcement".
