Alienware now makes fastest GIMPS machines out there?
Now you can truly be the first to own the new Alienware Area-51m, the ultimate mobile gaming machine. Alienware is offering the first new Area-51m on eBay. The winning bidder will become the proud owner of the fastest mobile gaming machine (and GIMPS machine :) ) on the planet even before it is offered for sale.
-ebay item 3428877889 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3428877889 It is hard to tell if you are paying for the signature  , the "first of" hahaha at your friends, or the actual specs. But i can tell you one thing, that machine could definitely run Prime95 w/ that 3.2ghz P4 :) . I wonder at that price could we build a GIMPS super computer  . |
For $15K, we could run 35~40 computers with 1.5GHz celerons, and alternate monitor usage to check progress, which for our purposes I think would do better than 1 computer running a 3.2GHz P4.
|
I'll bet that "laptop" has a battery life of about 20 minutes.

You just install linux on all of them and telnet in when you need to make adjustments to the client. |
Telnet? Oh the horror! :)
|
eh to telnet :yucky: - not sure about linux since i've never used it (we need a gasp emoticon) - but you can buy a 15" monitor for like $10 at the right sale

VNC is a nice, user-friendly freeware solution. So simple even I can install it. Works on Windoze and UNIX.

[pedant] Well, presumably you need one monitor! Otherwise, even with VNC, you're not going to be able to see a thing! :) [/pedant] |

Well, it is back down to $11k. The person who bid $15k had their bid canceled, due to that person being a "Self-Proclaimed Bogus Bidder". |
so down to only 30 1.5 celeries?
|
dont the celerons get bad timings on 25M and up  ? We would need some Northwood P4's :) .
|
Wouldn't be hard to build at least 30 Northwood P4 boxes for $11,000 - WITH KVMs and a monitor or two.
1.8's overclock nicely, or possibly 2.4C's though in smaller numbers.... |
HEY :) !! Even though its bid is around $11,000, we could get FREE SHIPPING!!!
:D  |
