Well I am not a concrete truck driver, so any concrete truck driving related matters expressed here are just my untrained personal opinion:

What is it with so many people feeling the need to tell the world what they are not?
Lawsuits involve law, and that's where on-line discussion can intersect with the real world. It's customary to disclaim professional legal expertise when amateurs discuss law in online forums (there's even a standard web acronym: IANAL, meaning "I am not a lawyer"), so that no reader relies on that amateur opinion in a real-world legal matter that has real consequences. (And so the legal-opinion-expressing amateur is not prosecuted for practicing law without a license!)

I followed my disclaimer with actual discussion and opinion about law that was relevant to this thread, so my disclaimer was not some empty gesture, but had real purpose. So did jrk's disclaimer.

Are you actually going to post any opinion about concrete truck driving that would be relevant to this thread? If not, then your disclaimer would be just silly, were it not for its legitimate use as your example.
Could you create a museum of save files, so everyone could share your pleasant beeping feeling? Seriously. Not this one yet, but maybe the M44, M43... Just for grabs, and ya know... for fun!
I have save files from M32 to M44 just before finished :) I ran them 2 years ago for this thread: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=5862.
t happens when you (or worse yet, the stupid Windows XP at 3am with some stupid automatic updates) restart the computer
This is why I turn off everything automatic, so I'm actually in control of my computer (almost). Only thing I have on is AVG auto update, but not automatic virus scan of the whole harddisk. If AVG ever restarts my computer though, its gone too.
...that puts no obstacle in the way of using the software to find and verify Mersenne primes. EFF rules do not require that prize receipt and distribution be unencumbered by restrictions such as GIMPS's, in order for that software to be prize-eligible.

...

I recall that Ernst posted something about this, but I can't find it right now.
Neither Mlucas nor Glucas has any "prize money distribution" stipulation for use. The only restriction for Mlucas users is that if you use the software and discover a new prime, my name appears next to the discoverers, and GIMPS gets the usual co-credit.
Always fun to see a crank debunked with such marvelously appropriate timing, isn't it?
Note that this is from a thread discussing whether GIMPS will claim the EFF prize.
No big deal, right? But wait...
It appears rather more fun to speculate in suspense! I can only hope our slight can for a time fend off so many clever analysts! Ernst and the usual verifiers have been finally notified to begin their run(s), and George is back just in time for the fun.
Ernst, someone who has been notified of M45's true identity, is saying (indirectly) that GIMPS will claim the $100,000! So I think it's just been leaked that M45 is definitely >10M digits.

Hey, I didn't say this *particular* crank has been debunked, just that when such debunking does occur, it's always fun to see. Don't misquote, misconstrue, or misinterpret my unstated intentions, now, OK?

Yeah, I'm sure you just happened to post about the fun of crank-debunking with, as you might put it, marvelously appropriate timing.

Exactly - it would be marvelously appropriate timing were this particular crank proven to be debunked in such short order.
I guess this is because (especially in legal matters) it seems to be better to state that a "legal related" statement is an "untrained opinion" to avoid to be accused for possibly wrong statements.
Okay, sure, but this is just a social forum. We see wrong statements here all the time, it is nothing new. If someone chooses to take any (not just legal) advice and start getting themselves in trouble then isn't that their own fault? [Hey, judge, some dude on the Internet said I should do this, so you now have to side with me.]

On topic: Verification is set for two weeks, but is there a multicore (>8 cores) machine working on this? Last time there was a 16-core thing working on it and took just 6 days. What happened to that box?

Prime95 2008-08-27 21:02

There are two verifications running. Current estimated completion dates are September 8 and 12. These may change as more or less cores become available, parallel tuning, etc.

What happened to that box?
The verification run has to be run on a different hardware platform. Not just a different physical machine.
Jeff and Tony are being given time on machines by their workplaces (IIRC).
A dual CPU, quadcore, (total of 8 cores) machine of the x86 class (Core 2 Duo or what ever) can't do a true 'verification'. That would same software and same hardware.
Running M/GLucas on a different platform (like an Itanium, 68xxx, or a Cray) is a real verification. Tony's system is a 'cluster' not a box. It is being shared and the time is free, so we have to take what we are given, unless someone wants to pay to run a verification.
