"Christian Pundits Say They're the Real Victims in the Gay Marriage Fight Now"
http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2013/06/christian-pundits-gay-marriage/66646/
The Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional because, in part, the court found the law was created to express disapproval of a class of citizens: gay couples. But in doing so, the court created a new class of citizens to demonize: conservative Christians. At least, that's according to some conservative commentators and the religious right. . . . Like Erickson, The New York Times' Ross Douthat worries religious objections to gay marriage will come to look like 1960s-style Southern bigotry, unless gay-rights advocates have it in their heart to show some mercy:
Unless something dramatic changes in the drift of public opinion, the future of religious liberty on these issues is going to depend in part on the magnanimity of gay marriage supporters — the extent to which they are content with political, legal and cultural victories that leave the traditional view of marriage as a minority perspective with some modest purchase in civil society, versus the extent to which they decide to use every possible lever to make traditionalism as radioactive in the America of 2025 as white supremacism or anti-Semitism are today.
. . . Naturally, it was Rush Limbaugh who really clarified the stakes. "The Supreme Court majority, in its ruling, actually uses language that insults and demonizes the people who support marriage as it's been since the beginning of time," Limbaugh said on his radio show. There's an angry mob out there, and they're going to start hunting people down. The hunted are not the usual victims of hate crimes. They're people like Rush and his listeners:
I have often said that what animates people on the left -- what motivates them, what informs them -- is defeating us. No matter how, no matter what, no matter what it means. Their hatred for us overwhelms anything else. No matter the result, victory that includes impugning and demeaning and insulting us is what they seek. It's what makes them happy.
While wallowing in his victimhood, Limbaugh is still shocked at the reversal:
Okay, so here's basically what happens. Everything's going along just fine, everything's cool, and then all of a sudden homosexuals say, "You know what? We want to be married," and the people who don't think that marriage is anything other than a man and a woman said, "No, no, no, no. Marriage is strictly between a man and a woman. That's what it means; it's what it's always meant." So the people who want the change then attack the defenders of the status quo as being hateful bigots, and the Supreme Court took up that argument and made their decision on that basis.
Everything's cool, and then all of a sudden, gay people want to be treated like everyone else. Those gays are such bigots.
|
That is amusing, Brian. The "k" is one of two letters which begin radio station call signs. "ut" has to stand for University of Texas. Funny that the combination has a negative connotation in Dutch.
Just be glad it wasn't the University of North Texas! |
In response to the "Atlantic Wire" article which cheesehead links and quotes above, I'd be interested to know if anyone here actually feels personally victimised by the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA, or personally threatened by marriage equality activists in general, as suggested by Rush Limbaugh. It's an issue I've heard raised before, but I've never been able to understand it: the oft-quoted advice...
those who don't like same sex marriage should not marry someone of the same sex
...has always seemed to me to cover any potential difficulties around opening marriage to same sex couples. If anyone can help me see past my blinkered viewpoint, I'd be genuinely grateful. |
Rush Limbaugh likes marriage so much he is getting better at it:

3 years, Roxy Maxine McNeely (1977–1980, div.)
7 years, Michelle Sixta (1983–1990, div.)
10 years, Marta Fitzgerald (1994–2004, div.)
current, Kathryn Rogers (2010–pres)
Practice makes perfect! He should convert to Islam and just accumulate, rather than leaving all those bitter exes in his [sizeable] wake. Just watched John Wayne's final (and wonderfully nuanced) film The Shootist a couple nights ago on AMC. Reading up on the film afterward I saw that Wayne - who was sometimes accused of being a hardcore righty-whitey, was married 3 times - and each of his wives was Latina. [Now, he may still have been a hardcore righty-whitey in public life, but apparently not at home.] |

Far too many forum participants would fail to recognize irony if I beat them over the head with a ferrous bar. |
Using a word for part of a womans body as a negative modifier seems a little...gay. ;)
Using gay as an insult seems to be so prominent in society that I tend to think of it as a homonym relative to gay meaning homosexual. |

That's what offends me the most, I can't speak for other Christains. It's like I've said before, I don't hate homosexuals, I hate homosexuality. Just like I don't hate murderers, I just want people to be safe. |

Yes, the word certainly does seem to get used as a generic insult with no intended reference to sexuality. Unfortunately, that generates a lot of confusion amongst both those doing the insulting and those insulted, and it contributes to homophobia in general. This in turn leads to enormous distress amongst people, especially youngsters, who are coming to terms with their sexuality. Ultimately it can, and does, result in teenage suicides. |
