Though it doesn't directly affect you in particular -- Congratulations, Brian! :-)

(And also to a Jack and a certain other Brian, in Detroit or wherever you may be ...)

A major civil rights win for sure! SCOTUS has done a great job of pissing off the highly conservative this week. It is sad that good news like this is juxtaposed with two black churches being burned in the South and the absolutely idiotic statements made in the past few days by the likes of Sam Brownback (the chimpanzee that is my governor), Scott Walker, and others.

To Jack and Brian, possibly in Detroit: I don't know you, but warmest congratulations!

And to all who made this historic day possible after your years of campaigning: you are heroes of your time!

What a great day for the USA. The world is looking at you now.

Shifting attention elsewhere in the world for a moment, let's note that Turkey's LGBT-Pride in Istanbul was banned at the last moment on the pretext of being offensive during the Ramadan, its marchers attacked by police with water canon despite no provocation whatsoever, but still went ahead thanks to support in the form of courageous physical presence from politicians of opposition parties. These politicians are generally straight allies of the LGBT struggle and muslim, as explained in this article:
At Istanbul Gay Pride 2015 Muslim straight allies put their bodies on the line for LGBT.

This is not the world media headline.

The video and pictures of the police assault on Istanbul Gay Pride are horrible. But the event went on. The police did not stop it, after the assault they stopped and the party carried on.

What forced them to stop their assault was that Turkish members of parliament put their own bodies on the line. HDP and CHP MPs formed a line to stop the assault - some got beaten as a result. [...]

... citing principles of religious liberty ...

I note that a common theme in conservatives' reactions has been the presumption that Christians have a "right" to force other people to abide by Christian principles (that are not written into law) in secular contexts. In other words, Christian religious liberty is violated whenever Christians are prevented from interfering with the religious liberties of non-Christians (This was also the supposed basis for recent state "religious liberty" laws.)

In particular, there's conservative hysteria about Obergefell being used to force churches to host same-sex weddings against their will. This is legal nonsense, but it plays very well to the fundamentalists.

- - -

Let me note that my comments about this apply principally to fundamentalist Christians. There are many Christian denominations that are more tolerant. But the fundamentalists almost always speak as though they represented the entirety of Christianity, so it's hard to keep from slipping into that same framing in response. (Also, I grew up in a hotbed of fundamentalism.)
