No gays, no blacks, no fat people: film advertising betrayals

Movie posters blank out gay people and also sometimes people who are not white or not slim.
A collection of examples: http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/jan/08/no-gays-no-blacks-no-fat-people-film-advertising-betrayals
Yes, both these examples show references to gay people and LGBT issues erased from promotions when these issues played the central role and were in fact the "whole point" of the films. I suppose I can see one positive aspect of this blatant sidelining: people who would have been immediately "turned off" by references to same gender love and would not have seen the films in question if it had been made clear to them beforehand that this was what they were about, would now be conned into seeing the films after all and possibly be made to think about issues which they have blocked out of their consciousness (if they did'nt walk out of the film showing in disgust, that is). While I don't for one moment suspect that this was the motivation behind the censorship in the promotion, it could be an unintended positive side effect.

If I had said that last sentence, I would have been being disingenuous. Of course that's part of the reason.

Homosexuality is not, of course, the only issue to be sidelined by the likes of Hollywood and other big film producers. An example I remember is the film Mask from 1985. It's a moving story about a boy who suffers from a disorder which deforms his skull, and how his appearance detrimentally affects the way other people treat him despite the fact that he is a warm, intelligent human being. The actor who plays the boy stars in this film, and Cher, who plays his mother, co-stars. However, the boy's image did not appear on the promotional material. The Wikipedia link shows a release poster whose image is unclear but which I think depicts only Cher, and another one which I saw when I watched the film depicts Cher with another very minor actor in the film who plays her love interest but is otherwise totally inconsequential. Obviously the film's promoter felt that the starring character's image, a boy with the face-deforming "lionitis" condition, would put people off going to see the film.
Again, the image is off-putting, so it was omitted, and movie-goers got to see a challenging movie.

Grieving wife, children, extended family and friends, all turned away from church 15 minutes before funeral service scheduled to start, forced to move en masse to a venue which is to small to accommodate them all, because the pastor objects to (previously agreed and approved) pictures being shown of the deceased woman kissing her wife.

Further to the article above, for which I can find no suitable words to express enough horror at the way those grieving mourners were handled, I have now finally managed to locate a fairly similar case from a few months ago, also in the USA. In this case the church canceled the funeral when it found out that the deceased man was gay. Someone apparently read an obituary referring to the dead man's "loving husband", and decided that this meant that the funeral could not go ahead.

The article I want to link to about this incident is from examiner.com. The reason for this choice is that underneath the article is a large discussion, currently 185 comments, amongst people debating whether or not the church was justified in not going ahead with the funeral. There are plenty of people openly supporting the church's position. Any notion that such extreme bigotry is confined to a few wackos is therefore misplaced.

I wonder how the church was selected as the site of the funeral. I wonder if whoever made arrangements was aware of Welcoming Congregations. Their website shows congregations in the same town, where the family would have been welcome.

I hadn't heard of Welcoming Congregations before reading your posting even though I look at various LGBT websites regularly, including USA-based ones. It does seem likely that the family was unaware of this organisation. Or maybe they simply could not fathom that their church might reject them in this way at such a terrible time.

It's tragic how unacceptably outrageous things can occur when we are already in the midst of overwhelming grief.

Slowly but surely.

Coming soon! a crazy right wing "documentary" blaming the Gays for every bad thing.

it will be interesting to see what exactly Rand Paul says about this subject (he's in the documentary somehow) unless he's being taken out of context it seems like he will piss off the libertarians with this one.

A counter to my previous post, didn't we fight a war over this? Didn't Cruz' side lose?
