Game

It seems we are going to play Black. I expect to see 1. e4 unless they want to avoid the Sicilian.

Hi team-mates.

Thanks WMHalsdorf for the password.

From my inside knowledge of my former team-mates who are now on the opposing team, I also rather expect 1.e4.

What would we each favour as a reply if they do that? My own experience is from the Sicilian (1...c5), French (1...e6) and Caro Kann (1...c6) defences. There are many other good replies too.

Hi both. I'm only comfortable with P-K4 and P-Q4 openings, don't know the Sicilian (is it offense or defense that
starts it?), and expect to learn. I'll be improvising by the third moves.

So I would say 1. e4 e5 if I didn't know that Ruy is tough for black.
But I vote for what your preference is.

And what's our name? I don't like "Anonymous".

And where is the gameboard / recap?

Oh and hi to you, captain, don't you think you're wanted at ship's helm?
(Are we even on the right ship?)

davar55 2014-12-20 04:40

No answer. Scary. Alone on an unknown ship. What should I do?

Perhaps there's a secret passageway right through this wall of fire ...

(Oops. This is reality. No magic.)

OK I give. Good night.

1.e4 e5 is of course a frequent way to start the game. Unfortunately I have no personal playing experience of it at all, because I don't open 1.e4 as White, and I always play a semi-open defence - i.e. a move other than 1...e5 - when facing the king's pawn as Black. I would nonetheless be happy to widen my experience and would be very happy to play 1...e5 if that is the consensus.

Broadly, after 1.e4, Black can choose from several sound and largely defensive openings (1...e5, 1...e6, 1...c6), the counter-attacking 1...c5, or various "hypermodern" systems which allow White a lot of space in the hope of attacking White's central pawn structure later on (1...d6, 1...g6, 1...Nf6). There are various offbeat but playable others too (1...Nc6, 1...d5, 1...b6!?, 1...a6?!), but the moves in that last section really do allow White a serious opening advantage which I think is unwise in a correspondence game.

OK, shall we do this by POE? First, ignore moves like 1..h3, 1..Nh3, etc. which we know are bad although it takes them
quickly out of the book.

WMHalsdorf 2014-12-20 21:29

I just occurred to me that by naming our team after Morphy they may not opt to play 1. e4 to avoid the the defensive variations name after him.

It's possible. Maybe they're hoping that with their team name we'll be frightened of their king and avoid attacking it during the game too.

Clever stratagem. You must know what you're doing.
