Choose your own K and work on finding a top-5000 prime!
 
Below is a list of K values that can be reserved. Each K has at least
90 primes in the range n=0-50k. I have checked the top-5000 list
(as of Jan 2006) and none of these K values have primes reported so
they should be 'clean'.

There are many considerations to picking a K: LLR runs faster on smaller values of K,
higher weight K's will have more candidates to test, and luck! You may want to check
the most recent top-5000 list and run the K in the range 50-100K or more before
embarking on a quest for a top-5000 prime.

One question and two notes :smile:

Q: What range of n is involved in computing the weight?

N1: Since we are not 15k anymore we can try k's not divisible by 15. I remember before you mentioned several. In fact from time to time I still work on one of them, k=67773, but I found no reportable primes yet. :sad:

N2: There was a program somewhere around to compute Nash/Robinson weights. Just to fill the table but they are not so helpful in finding prolific k's...

The weight is computed from sieving n=0-10k. I've updated the original
post with this information. This list takes all 79,000 candidates I
tested and sorted them by total number of primes. These all happen
to be 15k. I also plan on posting lists for # primes/candidates and
low-weight Ks. Those two lists should have many non-15k Ks.

Sure thing! In the new RPS team drive and other group activities,
we have done the K selection and sieving for you. All you have to
do is run LLR. If you want to venture out into testing your own K,
you can select one here, sieve it, then run LLR yourself. It all
depends on how you want to work. The group searches are usually
split up into chunks of 3-4 days of work. If you run your own K and
find a productive one, you may stick with that one for months
reporting primes along the way. Basically, less communication is
needed and you have more 'control'.

For details on how to sieve and run LLR, you can see the post

Note, the minimum n (nmin in the post) for a top-5000 prime is around
203000 now so I'd start with a range of 203000-250000. For the Ks
listed here, I would expect, *on average*, about 2 primes to be in that range.
The 'on average' meaning that the productivity of a certain K isn't really
known. Measuring the number of primes in the range 0-10k is a reasonable
first guess, but no guarantee. So the strategy may be to run a K in
the n=200-250k range and see how it goes. If no primes result, pick
another K. If you get 2-3 primes, you will probably want to continue
on in the 250k+ range. Of course, the larger the prime, the longer it'll
stick around on the top-5000 list.

I found the weight for k=698790798615 to be 1937.

When k>2^31 it has to be given to NewPGen as a product of factors less than 2^31. In the example above, k=1763*396364605. If such factorization does't exist then such k cannot be sieved using NewPgen.

Also, when using NewPGen be sure to check the "Verify results" box. There were reports of wrong results if it's not checked. I also log the removed numbers (Options-->Log the numbers removed).

And finally, sieve agressively, to say so, 24 hrs sieving is not enough (except for some very low weight k's or very small ranges of n). In my experience you cannot oversieve if you go to 1T (1000 bn), not even to 2T. If you have both Athlons and P-4's then sieve on Athlons, do LLR on P-4's.

So I made a sieve file for 230000<n<300000. First I will test this range, and maybe for the figures I will test the range 1<n<203000 in the future.
My first objective is to find a prime for my k with an n>203000.

IMO: This is some important information, perhaps it should be put somewhere on this forum as a guide.
Besides what do you mean by wrong results? Does newpgen fail to detect factor (not critical) or falsely reports factor (critical).

You shouldnt have to test 1 thru 10k in the above k's. Or am I wrong?

The range n=0-10k has already been tested for these ks. My usual
practice is to try is from the minimum reportable range up to 250 or 300k.
If it's productive, I'll then go back and test the 10-200k range.
There is no real requirement here - just do it the way you find most
interesting.

Could someone explain to me in basic steps (i'm not as computer literate) how I would reserve a k, run it for a few weeks, and hopefully find a bunch of primes?

I know how to run the LLR program, but that's about it so far...

Selecting your k is the easiest part, just get an available one from the first post in the thread. Then you will have to sieve the candidates using [URL=http://primes.utm.edu/programs/NewPGen/]NewPGen[/URL], it's a free software, get it from the link.

Suppose your k=165, create a new folder and name it "165", unzip NewPGen in that folder and start it, than in NewPGen:
1) Select "Create a new file"
2) Enter the name of the output file, for example "165.txt"
3) Go to "Type", select "k.b^n-1 with k fixed" by scrolling it down
4) Set base=2, k=165 (your k), nmin=210000, nmax=400000.
5) Check "Verify results"
6) Select "Options", check "Log the numbers removed", and also check "Use two save files".
7) Click "Start" and let it run for 72 hours or until the sieving bound is 500 billion or more (displayed at the bottom of the NewPGen window).

Then stop NewPGen and feed the file from Step (2) above to LLR. If you have a variety of machines then run NewPGen on Athlon (or Duron, Opteron, or Pentium-3) and run LLR on Pentium-4.

The same applies to k*2^n-1, k<300 where you asked the same question but I couldn't find time to reply. Over there the bounds in Step (4) will be different since many k's are already checked.

The sieving bound depends a lot on nmin and nmax (and in general case on [I]k[/I], but these are all high-weight ones, so it doesn't matter). If you go from nmin=10k you can stop sieving early, say at 20G, divide the NewPGen file into two parts, say to n=50k and the rest and then start LLR on the 10-50k range while keep on sieving 50-300k.

Also note that currently the "water line" to enter Top-5000 is at about n=207k, and if you go from n=10k by the time you reach 207k it will be already at 210k, that's why I suggested 210k above.

It should start high but then drop off pretty quickly. Once you've sieved
up to 100M, the rate will probably be 1 per every second or two. Past
that, the rate will keep dropping. You can switch over to LLR when the
rate is roughly equal to what it takes to run LLR on one candidate (or
probably sieve past this since you'll start LLR at the lowest n and work
upwards where LLR will be slower).

That depends on how long it takes for LLR to run on a candidate.
You can try running LLR on the input file that you have for just
one number. Keep sieving until sieving removes candidates slower
than LLR would and then switch over to LLR. My guess would be
keep sieving until one candidate is removed for every 100-150 seconds.

If NewPGen is running (on idle priority) while you are speed testing with llr you will need to set the priority of llr to at least 3 so that it takes about 99% of CPU time thus giving you an accurate timing.

A file with k=1785 values in the 361-400k range sieved to 386bn was kindly provided by Flatlander. The file was checked by Battlemaxx (L148) and John (L140) but they found no primes although 1785 looked promising since Flatlander found 7 primes in the 200-361k range.

I suffered a setback, I just bought a new box and 3 weeks later the hard drive crashed, its going to be replaced by dell, but for my k=1222853775, I lost all testing and sieve file from n=10k to 250k, I think my testing was at approx. 176K. My second box is still testing 250k to 300k.
Should I sieve & test from my last prime or start at 175k. All of the llrresults are gone also.

Sorry to hear that :sad: Recently they are putting trash components in their ready-made boxes :yucky: , that's the only way to have some profit while keeping low prices. Just say no to those $499 or similar offers. That's why it's much better to build your own machine if you can, you don't need a lot of technical knowledge, but you need time to explore the web and find what's currently [I]the best bang for buck[/I].:wink:

You can continue from [I]k[/I] you think was checked most recently, 176k in your case. We don't collect result files from "choose your own k", so no problems there.

And finally congrats on your latest prime, from the same [I]k [/I]:smile: Bad news are often interlaced with good news.:cool:

The number of digits is log base 10 of the number which comes out
to roughly 0.3*n. To get onto the top-5000 n must be at least
220k now.

I'd stick with LLR 362 unless we find something reproducibly wrong with it.

I am still working on k=736320585. My current status is n=500000. There are also some primes missing for this "k": 736320585*2^339426-1, 736320585*2^363497-1, 736320585*2^371961-1, 736320585*2^479381-1, 736320585*2^482897-1 :smile:
