Prime95 and future multi-core chips
1 Attachment(s)
Due to Moore's laws, we're probably going to have chips with large numbers of cores in the future. However, it's going to be a little awkward to stuff, say, 32 workers into the Prime95 window.

So I have an idea: users should be able to set how many worker windows they want displayed at a time, and rotate between the "sets" of worker windows (see the picture below).

What does everyone think?

Nice idea. It would be interesting since running all the cores may eventually be less efficient than running some due to main memory bandwidth and speed issues. Moreover the folks with 8+cores might also have Prime/CUDA running exceeding the possible CPU results even of 16-32cores (especially when main memory speed is considered). I'd love to see CUDA integrated into prime95 as well.

If you use the undocumented "full merge" windows mode, you don't have to worry about windows/sets - all-in-one window ^.^

I know that the "Window" menu lets users choose which worker window they want to view. Unfortunately, navigation can still be a hassle if there are a lot of cores. However, one easy solution would be to add a scroll bar to the main Prime95 window.

Come to think of it, the "Status" feature would also need an overhaul. Currently, Prime95 displays all of a computer's current assignment on a single dialog box. However, the dialog box is going to become oversized when many-core CPUs become common.

I've attached an image of my suggested change.
