I know this isn't an athletic support, but...

I'm trying to troubleshoot my machine. I recently noticed a severe drop-off in performance and ran the 3D Mark 11 benchmark test. My PC scored a 25, where PCs like mine scored on average 1800. Here are the links, which also display my system's specs http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/4229027 and http://www.3dmark.com/healthcheck/3dm11/4229027. Video card seems to be running fine so I wanted to check the CPU. I found Prime95, which ultimately led me here.

My question is, how do I go about figuring out what's causing the poor performance with my machine? I know it's a broad question, and there are probably a million different possibilities, I just need a starting point. Thanks in advance.

First thing I'd check is if I'd check the motherboard BIOS to make sure it is setting the CPU multiplier correctly. Then I'd check and see if the CPU heatsink/fan is clean and running properly. The CPU speed reported by 3DMark is 1.3GHz under the base clock for that CPU, which could indicate thermal throttling or bad multiplier setting.

If this is a new phenomenon, you should definitely look into your cooling situation. What are your temperatures?

+1
Try SpeedFan, if it's really high, it's probably throttling.

Oh and check out CPU-Z.
