What k range is this for?

Kosmaj 2013-05-31 22:22

a <= k < 10000

a=5 in RSP4M, should be a=3 in larger ones (?)

pinhodecarlos 2013-06-01 09:59

4 < k < 10000 and n < 9M

Just been playing around with these latest sieved files up to ~303P and there´s no difference from 2013-07-08 files until you reach 3950k. I think for the ones already going beyond 4M you can have less candidates to test.
For example for k=5 from 3980-3990 I got less 10 candidates to test but for 3950-3960 only one less candidate. From 3910-3950 number of candidates were equal.
These shows me that for sieved file up to 4M it is already oversieved. They need a month to sieve 10P and 10 candidates can be done in less than 24 hours. PrimeGrid should now be concentrated on sieving the 5M and 6M files up to 400P.

pepi37 2013-08-21 07:58

In "my " range K15 3600-3650 I got 3 candidates less :) or 5 hours less of LLR-ing :)

Lennart 2013-08-21 08:47

This is irrelevant data to decide what to sieve !!

The sievefiles covers 5<k<10000 3M<n<6M

Next sievefile covers 5<k<10000 6M<n<9M

I will start 3<k<10000 9M<n<12M soon. I need to start that manually first with srsieve.

k=3 is search to more then 10M thats why it is left out.

It is irrelevant for you that you are wasting energy that it is not yours and you didn't understand my point. Take out 4M files from your big sieve file and keep sieving. Anyway, that's my energy efficient analyst opinion but for me you can keep sieving whatever ranges you want.
I only care about my computers efficiency and electricity bills.

If the sieve time for a range was linear with the amount of candidates, yes we would have done smaller ranges. But that is not the case so we will continue to sieve as it is.

The file 3M-6M takes x sec. that does not mean that 5M-6M takes x/3 sec.

Do some tests and you will see for your self.

Carlos-
If I read this correctly, you're saying the file has no difference all the way from 3000 to 3950? That sounds like a pretty big error in the sieve process. Or do you mean that just 3910 to 3950 for just k=5 has no change? That would be part of the random nature of sieving.
If you mean the latter, I have no idea how you compute that the file is oversieved. Please explain your calculation?

Lennart-
Those numbers look pretty consistent for candidates removed per 1P sieved, mostly ruling out an error- though, as happened previously, it's possible there are errors in k=5.

Since I like computing sieve efficiencies myself, can you give me an idea of the sieve rate in T/day (or whatever units you find convenient) and what card you sieve with? I don't mind doing the calcs myself instead of asking Carlos to explain it to me.

Kosmaj 2013-08-22 03:27

I updated test files for k=5, 15, and 17 based on the latest file of Aug. 19 to respective threads.

I agree that the 3-4M range is excessively oversieved! The candidates can be removed faster by primality tests.

And finally, regarding the difference of k=5 test files between the previous sieving file (released in July) and this one, there are now 48 candidates less, and they appear to be almost uniformly distributed between 3027110 and 3980308.

What hardware do you use when comparing sec/f ?
most sieving is done with GPU's.

If you compare with CPU sieve time I can agree, but most sieving are done with GPU's.

I will ask Jim if he can give more info about the removal rate.

Here is some timings for a range on a GTX480

Sieve started: 303675222000000000 <= p < 303675231000000000 Thread 0 starting Detected GPU 0: GeForce GTX 480 Detected compute capability: 2.0 Detected 15 multiprocessors. Thread 0 completed Sieve complete: 303675222000000000 <= p < 303675231000000000 count=223575636,sum=0xd1617f2096f164d2 Elapsed time: 1067.52 sec. (1.09 init + 1066.42 sieve) at 8439596 p/sec. Processor time: 198.03 sec. (1.09 init + 196.94 sieve) at 45699162 p/sec. Average processor utilization: 1.00 (init), 0.18 (sieve) called boinc_finish

The fastest card will do this range on 600 sec

Normal speed on those ranges is 10min to 30 min depending on the card.

Lennart

VBCurtis 2013-08-22 07:02

Time for some estimating-out-loud:
a 9G range takes 20 minutes on this 480GTX. That's 27G/hr, or 600G/day.

According to Lennart's sieve-data post, each 1P sieved removes about 12,000 candidates from 3-4M, or 36,000 from the entire sieve. 1P/600G = 1650 GPU-days to remove 36,000 candidates, or 22.5 candidates per GPU day.

Recall that the srsieve series of programs scales with the square-root of n-range, so removing 3-4M and continuing to sieve 4-6M would not result in the sieve running 50% faster- it would be more like 25% faster while finding 66% of the factors, a net decrease in efficiency. If this GPU sieve scales the same way, sieving 4-6M might produce something like 18 factors per day. I did lots of calculations back in 2009-10, and found that a factor-of-two n-range was small enough that breaking off the lower end of the sieve would not produce a gain in efficiency- one should just run the entire sieve until the average LLR time per test matched the sieve. I don't know if this sieve code scales like srsieve...

My GPU (460M) can complete 3.5 Cuda-LLR tests per day at n=5M, the rough mean. The 480 Lennart cites might be 40-50% faster- let's say 4.5 tests/day as a guess. So, the sieve is currently 5x more efficient than CUDA-LLR on the typical candidate.

However, a large number of the k's in this sieve will never be tested. If less than 20% of the k's will be tested ever, then only 20% of the factors found via sieving "matter". 20% of 22.5 is 4.5 factors per day, exactly the rate LLR runs at. Carlos has observed that CPUs are more power-efficient at LLR than GPUs, but I am making an assumption that those who run BOINC for this project woudl run their GPUs on something anyway, so I may as well compare CUDA-LLR to GPU-sieve.

So, one's opinion of optimal sieve depth revolves around one's opinion of how much of this sieve will ever be tested. I believe 20% is optimistic for the fraction of k's that will be tested, so I think primegrid has reached the optimal level at this time.... but I missed something: this sieve finds factors for riesel and proth numbers at the same time! So it's finding twice as many factors as assumed above, and thus only 10% of the k's need ever be tested to justify its current 300P level.

So, how many k's do you think will ever be tested from 3-6M? Do we have any idea how many proth k's will be tested? My arbitrary guess is 15% sounds about right, making 450P the optimal depth for this sieve. RPS will use 5-300, NPLB 300-1000, Peter 1000-1300. That's 13% right there. I don't know a thing about the proth side.

VBCurtis 2013-08-22 07:11

Lennart-
Do you know what the limits of the software are? Max p-value? If a 3M range is much more efficient than 2M, would a 4M or 5M range be yet more efficient?

Since 6-9M has barely started, it may be wiser to do 6-10M or even 6-12M for greater efficiency. Is there a reason not to run a bigger n-range?

One more idea: It may make sense to stop this sieve now, run 6-9M until 300P, and then add 5-6M to the 6-9M sieve and continue with 5-9M up to 800P or more. I thought this should have been done with 2-3M added in to 3-6M from 100P to 150P.

I shall check how much we can sieve.

Think about that we sieve for DC !!

We test all proth k's 3<k<10000

We sieve riesel/sierp (+1/-1) 5<k<10000 3M<n<6M. I have todo some tests if we can sieve more but I think some older card can't do that.

We also sieve 6M<n<9M manually now. http://home.comcast.net/~jimb_primegrid/ppr9M/

So if you calculate with DC you will see that we have lot of sieving left before we reach optimum

Lennart

VBCurtis 2013-08-22 17:33

Well folks, there you go. If they consider just the proth side for "optimal", since the riesel side is not their interest, optimal is around 700P.

Wow.

pinhodecarlos 2013-09-10 12:01

Here's a question, Riesel Side.

k=9 already tested to 5M
k=11 already tested to 4M
k=19 already tested to 5M
k=23 already tested to 5M
k=29 already tested to 4M
k=63 already tested to 4M
etc

Wouldn't be wise to take these k's from the sieve file? How much speed would be gained? For proth side a few k´s below 300 probably are also done to 4M and 5M.

Carlos

Edit: just asking.

We do not use any sievefile. We sieve 5<k<9999 3M<n<6M in a given P range.
It is not faster with a sievefile and lets say you have 2000 computer downloading ~300Mb every month.

Even if we sieved with a sievefile those k you say we should remove will not make any speedincrease anyone would notice.

There are 4998 k's both +1 and -1 so removing those k's will not make any difference.

I was wondering is someone here at RPS can host all sieve files from k<300 so members can quickly download the proper k zipped file without having the knowledge to extract them from the abcd file. Or maybe this is a stupid thing. Please make suggestions. Thank you.

Great idea. Open one DropBox or Google Drive and upload it....
If you dont have it , I can make it, but I need someone with fast upload. I only have 1 Mbit/sec, so 2GB of upload will be uploading very long :(

Storing only the k<300 would be just about 50MB per 1M range (or 11MB zipped). Thus, for storing n=1-6M one would need about 250MB at max.

I think I can host the files. Let me arrive at the lab to easily upload the files to a cloud.

pinhodecarlos 2014-02-11 11:21

I forgot I had access to a cloud so I uploaded the latest k<300 files to:

why do you use P as a prefix? 1000 Trillion is called a Quadrillion, not a pentillion wouldn't it makes more sense to use a 'Q'?

I think you need to study about the SI units and its prefixes. Check here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_prefix

See Symbol vs English word.

Carlos

Trilo 2014-06-06 17:12

Oh, ok, I got the 'T' confused with Trillion rather than terra. That explains why some people talk about sieving with a 'G' prefix..

VBCurtis 2014-06-06 20:23

Also, Q is ambiguous- do you mean quadrillion or quintillion? Metric prefixes lack this ambiguity.

Both !!!

It is good that they found it.

Bad because sieve will get slower to we find the problem.

No factors are removed from the sieve file before they are checked to be good.

The analyze will tell us what to redo.

That means I see no problems for your search.

There are still numerous (differences of) squares in these files and other higher trivial powers.
There always have been, and after quite a few discussion, they are still there.
Take for example k=9 (566 squares in rsp5M file), k=81 (369 squares in rsp5M file), k=27 (790 cubes in rsp5M file), and so on.

I can send you cleaned up files - contact me by email, ok? I can send you (temporary) dropbox links.
Thank you for the hosting for so many years. :tu:

Serge and I are in touch by email about this. At some future point soon I'll get those candidates removed and repost fixed files. I'm most definitely not a math genius and wouldn't have thought about stuff like this. Apparently nobody else at PrimeGrid ever did either.

Granted, the problem only concerns people with a few selected k values.
For example, P.Benson for k=9 or L.Soule for k=243. Or the PrimeGrid's k=27.
The bulk of the 4998-k ABCD file is unaffected and as they say, "the average temperature of all patients in the hospital is almost normal". Some patients, though, are fairly cold (up to 5-7% of the candidates can be removed from future testing.)

The attached perl script can be run on the full ABCD, or anyone's local PFGW or NPG files.
Use it like follows:

Step 1. The script is attached (below). It produces the real algebraic.txt file.
7za x -so my.7z | ./dump_algebraic.pl > algebraic.txt
or
./dump_algebraic.pl my.abcd > algebraic.txt

Step 2. use
awk '{print "3333333333333333333333 | "$3}' algebraic.txt > algebraicForSrfile.txt

Step 3.
srfile -a -k algebraicForSrfile.txt my.abcd

Step 4. rm algebraicForSrfile.txt , so that no one laughs their socks off when they find it one day.

srfile has a "feature" -- when a factor is numeric and larger than what it can handle, it accepts it and removes the candidate without questioning or complaining! If you were to use 3 instead of 3333333333333333333333, it would dutifully report that "3 does not divide <###>" and would have removed nothing.

JimB,

Since a lot of RPS work is for k<300, could you (or someone else) post a separate link that only has the sieve files for k<300 instead of k<10000? It would cut down on the download time and file opening time by quite a lot.

Jim does us a favor by posting the link; if you think a k<300 file is a good plan, how about posting it for us (at least the first time)?

The link for downloading rsp1M_20150702.abcd on the front page gives a 404 error. It links to the old Comcast download and not primegrid. I managed to download it off primegrid but this should be fixed to help newcomers.

Sieve files for k*2^n-1

Here are the latest sieve files for 4 < k < 10000 and n < 12M. pmin and pmax give a range of what's been completed.

We kindly ask that srsieve AND psieve be credited with any primes found with these sieve files. Those are the two sieve programs used in the sieve. Should anyone wish to credit the effort (PrimeGrid) that is perfectly fine, but certainly NOT required.

Please note the new file locations. Comcast has discontinued free hosting, so these files are now hosted on PrimeGrid. The main url for these files is now http://www.primegrid.com/sieving/rsp. Because it was requested and especially since PrimeGrid has to pay for outgoing bandwidth, subsets of all the sieves for k < 300 are now available.

Suspended. Why suspended?

I am running a test with PFGW on the first item in the suspended list. I do not see any problems...

VBCurtis 2020-01-29 17:43

Sieve work is suspended for 1M-6M because they're done with the sieve work. It is suspended for 10-12M merely because they're not actively working there; the computation cycles are focused on 6-9M presently.
