Can't open Prime 95....
Hi,
I'm trying to use Prime95 to stress test my new system (Vista 64) but I can't get the program to run. I downloaded the 64 bit version for Vista but when I click on the exe nothing happens. Tried compatibilitymode, running from command prompt, looking around on the net - nothing... strange. Any suggestions? |
Did you put it in the Program Files folder? If so, take it out of there; Vista (as well as later versions of Windows) do not support services that have a GUI.
|
Thanks for the reply. No I didn't - I tried running it from the desktop and various other locations... no process called prime95 appears when I run it, nothing! It's bizarre...
|
I assume it was this file you downloaded?
ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/p64v266.zip If not try it and unzip the file to a folder for example on the desktop. Doubleclick the Prime95.exe and it should popup with a sign where you can choose "Join GIMPS" or "Just stresstesting". |
I downloaded the one that ended 65 but I tried the one you linked, extracting it to it's own folder, and still no luck. I double click and nothing happens... I have no anti virus software so I can't think of anything that would be preventing me opening it....

Have a look at your taskbar. Maybe it starts silent and the symbol is somewhere next to the clock.
|
I'm afraid it's not on the taskbar. My PC is so fast I can't tell whether or not it's doing anything when I click the icon - I guess that's a good benchmark in itself!

I have EXACTLY the same problem here.
Prime 95 32 bit (26.5) will NOT start. It doesn't even load into memory. 26.4 works perfectly though. In XP32 right now. Does anyone have an idea what's going on? I'm using an i7-2600k (HT disabled). |
Phew I thought it was just me - guessing it's a bug. I'll look for an earlier version - thanks for the tip.
|
I can confirm - 26.4 works for me.

Wierd; all systems I am familiar with are either XP or Win7. I get warnings from Windows 7 about not being able to verify the publisher. Is there an all command line version that works like ./mprime -h, that simply prints out help? |
Are these problem machines hyperthreaded?
|
It's a core i7-2600k.
I tested it with hyperthreading enabled and disabled. Either one, Prime won't start on 26.5 on windows XP. The application isn't even in memory. It just doesn't load... 26.4 works perfectly. |
